What are you doing for the extended holiday weekend? Will you take time to remember those who served our country and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy? If you’re looking for more than just another BBQ this year, try one of these events.

Here are your top Central Iowa Memorial Day weekend events.

Anytime: Take an audio guided walking tour of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park.

Thursday: The first Nitefall on the River of the season kicks off with the BoDeans.

Thursday: Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts perform a free concert at Jasper Winery tonight.

Thursday: Head to West Des Moines for Valley Junction’s Music in the Junction and farmers market.

Thursday through Saturday: See Fat Pig, a play about the social dynamics of a romance between a relatively fit guy and an overweight woman.

Thursday: It doesn’t matter if you’re a Carrie, Miranda, Samantha or Charlotte: “Sex and the City 2″ opens today and you know it will be full of fashion, fun and guys.

Friday: The acclaimed Belin Quartet kicks off its free, 10-week summer concert series.

Friday: Urbandale’s Friday Fest features Faculty Lounge.

Friday: Jake Gyllenhaal’s new flick, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” opens today.

Saturday: Wake up bright and early for the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market.

Saturday: Pick up art, plus vintage and handmade goods at Market Day.

Saturday: Whet your appetite for the Des Moines Metro Opera: the company’s Apprentice Artist Program kicks the season with a free evening of introductions and arias entitled Death by Aria.

Saturday: Dance the night away at Salsa with the Stars.

Saturday and Sunday: Let the pros do the cooking for you at Smokin’ in the Junction.

Saturday/Sunday: Enjoy authentic food and music at the Cajun and Zydeco Fest in the Amana Colonies.

MondayLiving History Farms celebrates Memorial Day with a patriotic concert, ceremony and 1870s-rules baseball game.

Monday – The Des Moines Metro Cadet Squadron will perform Colors and Taps and Scouts will grill food at the Fort Des Moines Museum.
